Afterload Interventions



Afterload interventions may make it easier or more difficult for the heart to pump blood volume through the distal peripheral circulation by changing the pressure of the arterial system. These interventions are:

Increase – through the use of vasopressors

dopamine at higher doses
epipnephrine
norepinephrine
neosynephrine

Decrease – through the use of vasodilators

nitroprusside
nitroglycerin at higher doses
calcium channel blockers
ACE inhibitors
hydralazine
PDE inhibitors
