Dr. Ryan Novak and colleagues at The Ohio State University Medical Center are reporting in an abstract published in the September, 2012 Journal of the American College of Surgeons and to be presented at the American College of Surgeons in October, 2012 that the risk of acute urinary retention (AUR) in robotic prostatectomy is low.
The investigators looked at 1026 patients and found 26 (2.6%) with acute urinary retention. The only patient-related risk factor was length of catheterization, with a rate of .6% of AUR if the catheter was left in place for at least 5 days.
