Although many people think that typhoid disease has been eradicated from the United States, the microbe causes between 500 to 1,000 new cases of enteritis each year.
It is a serious disease involving mainly the distal ileum, with ulceration and hemorrhage affecting 20% to 30% of cases.
It can be detected via both stool and blood cultures and is treated with chloramphenicol, ampicillin, and amoxicillin until sensitivities are available.
