Meckel diverticulum is a congenital outpouching of the ileum that is a normal variant and is failure of obliteration of the embryological vitelline duct. It is a true diverticulum in the sense that it has all three layers of the gastrointestinal wall.
Characteristics about Meckel’s diverticula are best remembered by the classic rule of two:
2 times more common in males
2 feet proximal to the ileocecal valve
2 types of mucosa possible (small intestine and gastric)
2 percent become symptomatic
2 years of age is typical onset of symptoms
